Protesters in Saraçhane Break the Windows of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Building and Enter Inside
Following the detainment of 90 suspects, including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, in the scope of the “Corruption” and “Terror” investigations conducted against IMM, the protests have continued. During the speech of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in Saraçhane, a group among the crowd caused disturbances. The police intervened with individuals in the group throwing flammable and explosive substances.
Police Prevented the Group from Marching to Taksim
Some individuals from the crowd started to walk towards Taksim by the Bozdoğan Kemeri. The police officers waiting in front of the archway prevented the demonstrators from advancing towards Taksim.
They Broke the Windows and Doors of the IMM Building and Entered Inside
Until late at night, there were occasional skirmishes between the large crowd waiting in front of the IMM building in Saraçhane and the police. The police tried to disperse the group by using pepper spray and pressurized water while they tried to resist staying in the area. Trying to escape the intervention, the group headed towards the IMM building. The individuals in the group broke the door and windows by force as they couldn’t open it, entering inside.
97 Suspects in Custody
Minister of the Interior Ali Yerlikaya announced that 97 suspects were detained for “Violation of Law No. 2911”, “Damaging Public Property”, and “Resisting to Fulfill Duty” during the protests. Minister Yerlikaya stated, “Our police officers, with patience and common sense, did not allow those who threaten the peace and security of our nation, provocations, and vandalism to prevail! Those trying to terrorize the streets with their actions will never succeed! During tonight’s demonstrations; 97 suspects were detained for ‘Violation of Law No. 2911’, ‘Damaging Public Property’, and ‘Resisting to Fulfill Duty’. Our police officers, the guarantee of our peace and security, are on duty day and night.”
16 Police Officers Injured
